MONROE - Monroe school district support staff will get a 2.77 percent pay increase this year, and 1.9 percent next year under a contract approved Monday by the Monroe School Board.

The board met in closed session to approve the contract. The school district and the Monroe Association of Support Staff reached a tentative agreement Dec. 5.

The contract covers the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years.

The base rate for MASS employees is $11.08 per hour. The highest pay rate is $18.54, although there aren't many employees in the highest pay category, Business Administrator Ron Olson said.

The contract covers 145 full- and part-time employees.

The contract also made some language more clear. Sick time, for example, was changed to hours instead of days, Olson said.

Negotiations began in June. Support staff has been working under the previous contract's term since it expired June 30.
