MONROE - At this time of year, as the holidays approach, people begin to think more about helping others.

Monroe Clinic employees donated several pounds of food Monday to the Green County Inter-Church Food pantry. The employees collected food Oct. 21 at the Mission Effectiveness Committee meal at the clinic. A wide assortment of food was gathered and brought to the food panty.

Mary Dietz, who manages the food pantry, was thankful for the support.

The food pantry always needs food for families. More than 50 families are helped each month through the generosity of the community, she said. Parents and children will be able to eat healthy meals because people in Green County care enough to give.

While many people think of buying video games or toys, many others in Green County are in need of a hot meal.

Around the holidays, donations for the food pantry increase, Dietz said.

Non-perishable foods are the most common items brought to the food pantry. Noodles, Hamburger Helper products, pudding, cake mixes, spaghetti sauce and pasta, peanut butter, sugar, flour, boxed potatoes, soup and crackers are just a few of the items people will find at the pantry.

Dietz said the food pantry will accept perishable items but said people need to bring those items in on Mondays, when the pantry is open, so they can be given away quickly.

The food pantry is open from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Monday and is located at 1015 15th Ave. More information is available by calling the pantry at 329-7511.
