Clerk, coroner unopposed

DARLINGTON - Two incumbent candidates are running unopposed for clerk of courts and coroner in Lafayette County in Tuesday's election.

Catherine McGowan has served as clerk of courts since 1997, having first joined the clerk's office in 1993 as child support clerk. McGowan has worked for Lafayette County since 1976. She worked in the unified services department, which eventually became the human services department; and also worked in the county clerk's office.

She is married, and she and her husband, Steve, have four sons and eight grandchildren.

Coroner Virginia Douglas has served as the county's coroner since 2003. She worked in the coroner's office since 1995. She also worked at Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County and at the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department. She also was employed by Rural Medical Ambulance service for several years.

She has five sons, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
