MONROE - The City of Monroe will have two new "Class B" liquor sales licenses available.

Thanks to the Common Council's new city codes for liquor sales, expected to pass June 16 following a public hearing, the Class B licenses will allow the license holders to serve alcoholic beverages by the drink.

Applications for the licenses are due July 1 to the City Clerk's office in City Hall.

Applications for both licenses will be reviewed by the License Committee, which will make its recommendations to the Common Council for granting.

According to City Clerk Carol Stamm, one license is available for a fee of $500. The other is a special "reserve" license allowed by the state, requiring a $10,000 fee.

Applicants of the reserve license also may apply for an economic development grant, offered by the city, requiring the license holder to make improvements to the premises issued the license. The request of the amount of the grant cannot exceed $10,000. The grant funds are to be dispersed after the licensed premise is operating and open to the public.

With the granting of the two licenses, the City of Monroe will have 25 operating businesses allowed to serve intoxicating liquor drinks.

For more information on the availability of these and other liquor licenses, including packaged liquors, beer, wine and sidewalk cafes, contact the City Clerk's office at 329-2524.
