MONROE - In a meeting Monday, the City of Monroe Board of Public Works:

• Approved payment of bills in the amount of $4,584 from Whitney Tree Service for tree removal, tree trimming and stump removal.

• Authorized hiring Irv's Masonry for municipal building brick repair and sealing for up to $10,500. The Public Works reserve account or Municipal Building capital account will be used to fund the project.

• Authorized the Historic Cheesemaking Center to connect to city sanitary sewer. The center is receiving a donated historic cheese factory, including an intact kettle, in which it intends to demonstrate cheesemaking about twice a year. Whey produced is to be hauled away. The sewer connection will facilitate clean up.

• Heard from Public Works Director Kelly Finkenbinder that the city has received a $110,360 grant from the state for 2010 recycling.

MONROE - In a meeting Monday, the City of Monroe Public Safety Committee:

• Approved installing yield signs for traffic control on 4th Street North at North 12th Avenue.

• Directed Police Chief Fred Kelley to bring recommendations on parking enforcement and enforcement systems for the downtown area to the May 17 meeting.

• Recommended the Common Council approve special events for Main Street Spring Maxwell Street Days Event, May 7 and 8; Chamber of Commerce Square Affair Event, May 22; and American Legion Memorial Day Parade and Service, May 31.
