City of Monroe Common Council: Jan. 19, 2010

MONROE - In a meeting Tuesday, the City of Monroe Common Council:

• Approved the appointment of Steve Bechtolt to the Revolving Loan Committee.

• Set public hearing date for Feb. 2, 2010, for an ordinance repealing and recreating Title 10 of the Monroe City Code: Vehicles and Traffic.

• Set public hearing date for March 2, 2010, resolution vacating and discontinuing right-of-way (20th Avenue North of 5th Street)

• Passed unanimously a resolution approving abandonment of easement rights.

• Passed unanimously a resolution approving post employment health plan for public employees program for AFSCME union.

• Passed 9-0 a resolution clarifying paid, on-call firefighter benefits and workers comp insurance. Alderman Mark Coplien abstained.

• Passed unanimously a resolution authorizing hiring Erin Menzel as part-time occasional dispatcher.

• Approved claims in the amount of a $4,192,977.42.

• Passed unanimously a resolution approving creation of pedestrian crossings at mid-block point of the 1000 blocks of 16th and 17th Avenue and of the 1600 blocks of 10th and 11th streets. The Street Department also is directed to install official signs indicating, per state statutes, no parking within 15 feet of these crosswalks. Painting the location of the crosswalks will be done when possible.

• Granted secondhand article dealer licenses to CPP Computer LLC (Hans Wampfler) and to RIVCOM LLC (Michael H. Rivers).

• Passed unanimously a resolution approving change order to E & N Hughes contract for downtown streetscape project. The change order, for a net increase of $17,764,20, was for hot water, chemicals and labor to complete the downtown reconstruction concrete work in November, previously authorized by the council.

Mayor Ron Marsh welcomed the soldiers of 1158th back onto American soil.

Pam Christopher, director of Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced MCCI's annual dinner will take place Jan. 28, when elected officials will be acknowledged, and mayoral candidates will be given time to make a brief statement.

Christopher also announced MCCI will be hosting a candidate debate at 7 p.m. March 25 at the Monroe High School Performing Arts Center. Candidates invited to the debates will include incumbents and their challengers for city council, mayor and county supervisor seats.
