MONROE - At a meeting Monday, the City of Monroe Board of Public Works:
Approved payment bills in the amounts of $3,729 from Whitney Tree Service for tree removal and trimming; $643 from Fehr-Graham & Associates for Walmart utility inspection (to be billed to Walmart); $1,100 from J&R Excavating for stream bank restoration project; and $16,662.32 from Rock Solid Concrete LLC for 2008 sidewalk replacement program.
Authorized Fehr-Graham & Associates to seek bids for streetlights and installation for the downtown streetscape project. Bidding companies will have the option of bidding on three light fixture styles, and may also include the cost of LED lights as an alternative for the city.
The Monroe Main Street Design Committee chose three similar lamp styles from different lighting companies in order to provide a larger number of competitive bids.
Fehr-Graham estimates the cost will run about $312,000, including installation.
The LED lights require less maintenance, but the savings in cost of electricity is not expected to be much, because the Square does not use much, according to Ryan Wilson of Fehr-Graham. It is unlikely the city will qualify for any possible grants to off-set the costs, Wilson added.
Streetlamps and poles were pulled out of the original construction contract bidding, because Fehr-Graham decided the work could be done independently and by local contractors, Wilson said.
Accepted quotes for 2009 stream bank restoration project and authorize hiring J&R Excavating, at a cost of $2,625.
Authorized WWTP Director Jerry Ellefson to purchase replacement sanitary sewer cleaning nozzle from Envirotec at a cost of $3,285. The equipment is used to keep old sewer pipes clear of tree roots. It replaces an 11-year-old nozzle, for which parts are no longer available.
Discussed an offer, made by a Freeport military service organization, of a donation of American flag and solar light for Twining Park F-86 airplane. Board President Keith Ingwell suggested the city look into providing the light. City Parks Director Paul Klinzing was asked to look into the costs, and report at the next meeting Aug. 4.
Members Thurston Hanson and Alternate Dan Henke were absent.
