MONROE - On Monday, Aug. 18, the City of Monroe Board of Public Works:

• Accepted a quote from Sloan Implement, Monroe, in the amount of $19,330 for a replacement lawn mower and authorized Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent Jerry Ellefson to purchase it. The equipment was budgeted and replaces a 1978 mower for which repairs had become too costly.

• Recommended to City Council to hire Fehr-Graham and Associates in the amount of $49,000, not to exceed $75,000, for construction observations for the Wal-Mart project for installation of utilities that will be deeded to the city. Fehr-Graham will oversee the materials and methods used to install the utilities to make sure they meet city codes and requirements.

• Recommended to Council to approve a cost reimbursement agreement for Wal-Mart for utilities construction observations. The cost of Fehr-Graham's services will be paid for out of the general fund, and reimbursed by Wal-Mart as part of the agreement. The cost was not part of the original Wal-Mart planned unit development agreement with the city.

• Approved for payment bills from Rock Solid Concrete in the amount of $30,796.68 for the 2008 sidewalk project; from Green Valley Disposal in the amount of $3,349.52 for recycling; from Hasse Surveying in the amount of $4,885 for Eighth/Ninth streets plat; from Willett, Hofmann, & Associates, Inc. in the amount of $3,381.20 for 30th Street detention basin engineering services; from Fehr-Graham & Associates in the amount of $1,322 for downtown area survey, base map and schematic design.

MONROE - On Monday, Aug. 18, the City of Monroe Public Safety Committee:

• Denied a request for "no parking" areas in the 1000, 1100 and 1200 blocks of 11th Street during Cheese Days. Alderman Kent Kallembach said the resident who made the request cited safety issues caused by parked cars narrowing the street. Police Chief Fred Kelley said he cannot recall any accident in that area during past Cheese Days.

• Recommended to Salary and Personnel Committee to establish a mutual aid compensation rate at $18 per hour during Cheeses Days, which was the rate in 2006. Kelley said the compensation pays for added police officers during the event.

• Recommended to Council to approve the Lions Club Blues Festival during Cheese Days, Sept. 19 and 20; and Sloan Implement/Green County Fall National Tractor Pull Sept. 18 at the fairgrounds.
