MONROE - At a meeting Tuesday, the City of Monroe Common Council:
• Passed (10-0) a wage rate of $18 for mutual aid officers serving the city during Cheese Days. About 25 extra officers will be needed, according to Police Chief Fred Kelley. Kelley expects no trouble from the "open containers on the Square" event and no more extra officers are being hired than in other years. The wage rate passed is the same as in 2006.
• Approved for payment claims in the amount of $479,082.25.
• Passed (10-0) a resolution to deny a claim from WE Energies in the amount of $2,165.19 for damages caused June 26 in the vicinity of Ninth Avenue and 25th Street when an unmarked gas main was struck by city crews.
• Approved authorization of special events for the Monroe Lions Club to hold the Berghoff and Blues Festival Sept. 19-20 on Minhas Craft Brewery property, and for Sloane Implement/Green County Tractor Pullers to hold a Green County Fall Nationals Tractor Pull on Sept. 18 at the Green County Fairgrounds. Monroe police officers will be hired on a contracted basis for security for this event.
• Granted electrical contractor licenses to Kevin Schultz-South Central Electric and Loescher's Heating and Air Conditioning, and operator licenses to Mallory F. Haglund and Frederick J. Kloepping.
• Approved Julie Lin to be the agent of the Class "B" Restaurant fermented malt beverage and "Class C" Wine license issued to Chopsticks, LLC.
• Granted temporary Class "B" licenses to Monroe Lions Club for a tractor pull on Sept. 18, and for the blues festival on Sept. 19-20.
• Authorized (10-0) the hiring of Fehr-Graham and Associates, for $49,000, and not to exceed $75,000, to perform construction observations for utilities at the Wal-Mart project, which will be deeded to the city.
• Approved and accepted a Cost Reimbursement Agreement between the city and Wal-Mart Stores East, LP, regarding observations of utilities construction. Wal-Mart will reimburse the city for the cost of Fehr-Graham's services.
• Waived all requirements for obtaining city permits and collection of related fees for the new Green County Justice Center building project. Inspections will be handled by the state.
