MONROE — The Monroe Common Council is seeking a candidate to fill an at-large position vacated upon the death of Ald. Mary Jane Grenzow.

The former newspaper editor died May 11 after a battle with cancer. The council discussed a process for Grenzow’s replacement at the May 19 regular meeting.

“Residents of Monroe who are interested in serving in this citywide role are encouraged to contact the City Clerk’s Office to obtain nomination papers,” the council said, in a news release. “Each candidate must collect signatures from at least 50 residents of the City of Monroe.”

The Common Council will then review all the submissions and vote to appoint someone to fill the vacancy in July. The appointed alderperson will serve the remainder of the current term, which runs through mid-April 2026. And the appointee would be eligible for election in Spring of 2026, when the seat will be filled by a majority vote during the regular election process.
