MONROE - The Monroe City Band will open its 68th season at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the bandshell in Twining Park.

There is no charge for the concert. Patrons may sit on the benches at the bandshell, bring a blanket and sit on the grass, or bring their own lawn chair and pick a perfect spot.

This concert features selections from the Golden Age of Bands, 1880 to 1920. This is the time period of John Philip Sousa, not only as the director of the Marine Band, but also as the leader of his own professional band. However Sousa was not the lone composer, director and businessman; the Golden Age of Bands was full of colorful musicians whose talents, skills and tales have become obscured through time, according to a news release.

The current version of the Monroe City Band was organized in 1949 by the late Allan F. Barnard with the mission to provide music to the Green County area. One of the first appearances of the group was a Christmas concert for the residents, families and staff at the Green County Home, which is now the Pleasant View facility.
