MONROE - Cheesemakers from the region took home a number of top prizes in the annual U.S. Cheese Championships at Lambeau Field this week.
Steve Webster, of Monroe's Klondike Cheese Co., took first place - or best in class - in the Feta, Flavored category, with his peppercorn feta in brine that scored 99.05 points.
Steve Stettler of Brodhead's Decatur Dairy, took first place in the Havarti categorty, with his Havarti entry, which scored 99.50.
The "Decatur Team" from Brohead's Decatur dairy also took frist place in the Quesos Para Fundir category, for its Quesos Para Fundir entry, which scored 99.40.
Doug Kundert, of Monroe's Chalet Cheese Co-op, took first in the Smear Ripened Semi-Soft Cheeses category with his 5-pound German-style Brick Cheese Loaf, which scored 98.95.
Decatur Dairy's Stettler also took first in the Pepper Flavored Cheeses (Other Natural Styles) for his Havarti Pepper cheese, which scored 98.75
Bruce Workman, of Monticello's Edelweiss creamery took first place in the Reduced Fat Hard Cheese catergory, with his reduced fat, low sodum lacey swiss, scoring 99.15.
