Cheesemakers earn honors at contest

MONROE - Cheesemakers from the region took home a number of top prizes in the annual U.S. Cheese Championships at Lambeau Field this week.

•  Steve Webster, of Monroe's Klondike Cheese Co., took first place - or best in class - in the Feta, Flavored category, with his peppercorn feta in brine that scored 99.05 points.

•  Steve Stettler of Brodhead's Decatur Dairy, took first place in the Havarti categorty, with his Havarti entry, which scored 99.50.

•  The "Decatur Team" from Brohead's Decatur dairy also took frist place in the Quesos Para Fundir category, for its Quesos Para Fundir entry, which scored 99.40.

• Doug Kundert, of Monroe's Chalet Cheese Co-op, took first in the Smear Ripened Semi-Soft Cheeses category with his 5-pound German-style Brick Cheese Loaf, which scored 98.95.

•  Decatur Dairy's Stettler also took first in the Pepper Flavored Cheeses (Other Natural Styles) for his Havarti Pepper cheese, which scored 98.75

•  Bruce Workman, of Monticello's Edelweiss creamery took first place in the Reduced Fat Hard Cheese catergory, with his reduced fat, low sodum lacey swiss, scoring 99.15.
