MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department will be offering several opportunities to community youth in the coming weeks, including chances to learn skills with the Cheesemaker football and volleyball teams.
Football with the Cheesemakers will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at the Monroe High School practice field. Through the program, which is for grades K to 8, children can meet and drill with the Cheesemakers. Drills will include catching, throwing, kicking and blocking. Attendees should wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothing. Everyone will receive a T-shirt. In case of rain, the program will be held in the Monroe High School gyms.
Volleyball with the Cheesemakers will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, in the Monroe High School gym. Through the program, which is open to girls in fourth through eighth grade, girls will learn volleyball drills and skills. Attendees should wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothing. Everyone will receive a T-shirt.
The department is ordering shirts this week, so be sure to sign up this week. Other upcoming Youth Center programs are as follows.
- Cyber Bowling, Halloween Fun and Spooktacular Science Show, Thursday, Oct. 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. - Drop children off at Turner Hall for cyber bowling, Halloween games, and the Spooktacular Science Show. Cost is $6, and attendees will be asked to bring a treat.
- Science Wizards Camp, Friday, Oct. 28, from 1 to 5 p.m. - Explore the science of magic: investigate invisibility through the science of light and optics; learn about mechanisms for levitation; and mix your own potions. Program is for K to fifth grade. Cost is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. A minimum of 12 by Oct. 21 is required to hold the class, so sign up early.
- Parent and Tot Moving to Christmas Music, begins Monday, Nov. 21, 6 to 6:30 p.m., Community Center - Parents and their children, age 2 to 5, will move to music to develop exercise concepts and strength. The program runs from Nov. 21 to Dec. 12. Cost is $10 for both residents and $20 for both non-residents.
- Adult Volleyball League Openings: Men's 6x6 and 4x4 on Tuesday nights, Women's 6x6 on Wednesday nights, and Coed 4x4 on Thursday nights - Leagues start Oct. 17 and run through March. All leagues are supervised.
