MONROE - A new addition to the summer events offered at the Green County Fairgrounds, the Cheese City Challenge Truck & Tractor Pull, is set to kick off tonight at 6:30.

For 161 years, the fairgrounds area has held a number of events, and the first annual challenge pull has officially been added to the list.

With the South Central Wisconsin Tractor Pullers, Tri-County Pullers, Inc. and the Badger Truck Puller Association promised to attend with a total of 135 hooks on the docket, Anderson said the hope is to ensure the action is constant for those who attend.

Some of the best pullers in the country will be there, with competitors from Indiana, Michigan, the Twin Cities and a dozen from Kentucky to take part in the limited mini rod, econonmod mini rod and open mini rod classes. South Central pullers will be split between five classes. On the truck side, there will be an open stock, super stock and super street diesel class.

Shawn Weeden, a puller from Monroe, has made his mark as a part of the Tri-County Pullers and their circuit. Weeden will be on the Green County Fairgrounds track to compete as well.

Sponsor and organizer of the pull John Anderson is looking forward to increasing the use of the fairground tracks and the improvements made with the help of fellow sponsors. A project unearthed a clay-pulling track unused for 20 years due to the popularity of harness racing which will be used during the pull. The addition of portable bleachers allows spectators to take in the two tracks at an increased distance than in the past.

"(There's) newer, younger and more motivated blood who see they can use the fairgrounds more," Anderson said.

Recently, Anderson - as well as area businesses and individuals sponsoring this event - has worked within the principle of improvement for the fair.

Having visited the fairgrounds annually for nearly five decades, Anderson said he would like to give back to the area which has provided so much enjoyment for him. Improvements have included thousands in funds put into new lighting and a raised announcer platform. The additions will be utilized starting with the truck and tractor pull tonight.

With last year's plans for the August pull canceled due to bad weather, organizers are looking forward to hosting their first Cheese City Challenge.
