DARLINGTON - Lafayette County District Attorney Charlotte Doherty has filed charges against a man suspected of stabbing another man Saturday morning.

Abel Mendez Garcia, 23, Darlington, is being charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide, punishable by 60 years in prison, and aggravated battery, punishable by 15 years in prison.

Garcia, who is still at large, is Hispanic with black hair and brown eyes. He weighs approximately 150 pounds and is 5 feet, 4 inches tall.

Darlington Police Chief Jason King said based on information received from community leads, Garcia may already be in Mexico.

Lafayette County Circuit Court Judge William Johnston Monday issued a warrant for his arrest.

At 5:55 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County, where Rogelio Tornero-Hernandez, 20, Darlington was being treated for numerous knife wounds to his face, neck, arm and hand after being transported by private vehicle.

Tornero-Hernandez's injuries were not life-threatening, but required 21 stitches.

Initial findings revealed the fight occurred in a downtown alley. Witnesses intervened, bringing the fight to an end. But the suspect fled and remains at large as of Tuesday afternoon.

The general public is not believed to be in danger. King said this was an isolated incident involving people who knew one another. They were arguing over a domestic relationship.

Anyone with information about Garcia's whereabouts are asked to call Darlington Police at 776-4980.
