NEW GLARUS - Charges are pending against the Amcore Bank in New Glarus' assistant branch manager, who is accused of taking more than $100,000 from the bank over the past three years.

Abigail K. Eichelkraut, 25, New Glarus, was taken into custody Aug. 13 by the New Glarus Police Department, according to Police Chief Steve Allbaugh. Eichelkraut later confessed to embezzling $114,878 from the bank over a three-year period, Allbaugh said.

The Green County District Attorney's office was notified and Eichelkraut was released, pending a criminal complaint being filed.

As of Tuesday morning, no charges have been filed in Green County Circuit Court against Eichelkraut.

Allbaugh said he expects felony theft charges to be filed. There also could be federal charges filed, but for now, Allbaugh said he expects only state charges to be filed against Eichelkraut.

The New Glarus Police Department is waiting for bank security to finish its investigation, Allbaugh said. He said bank officials haven't said when they began to suspect Eichelkraut.

Allbaugh said Eichelkraut was cooperative when interviewed at the Green County Sheriff's Department.

He said Eichelkraut kept track of the amount of money she took from the bank. That was unusual, he added.

"I don't know if she kept hoping she'd be able to pay it back or thinking she'd be able to repay it if she won the lottery," Allbaugh said.

Eichelkraut told detectives she needed the money to meet expenses.

Allbaugh said there's no evidence that Eichelkraut's husband, David, was involved or knew anything about the embezzlement.

New Glarus police officers were called to Amcore Bank, located at 512 Wisconsin 69, at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Officers were told that an internal investigation had been ongoing for some time and it was discovered that an employee had embezzled money from the bank.

Amcore Bank corporate communication officer Michelle Polivka said Amcore Bank is working with the police to solve the matter.
