MONROE - The Green County Board of Supervisors enacted a modification to County Ordinance 6-1, "Nonresident Solicitors" on Dec. 8.
The code allows the sheriff to manage and enforce a soliciting, canvassing and direct-sales permit system for the unincorporated areas of the county. This revision brings new life into an older consumer protection law dealing with transient merchants and repairmen.
Local businesses and residents are exempted from the permit requirement, as consumer complaints on known persons in the community do not have the same issues. A number of other exemptions are made for non-profit organizations, wholesalers, and agricultural business.
Practices also prohibited under the law include activities after 9 p.m., calling at the rear door, remaining on the premises when asked to leave and making false claims.
Failure to obtain a permit or violating restrictions may result in a $200 citation. Permits will be issued by the sheriff's administrative office for a $10 fee.
Each application will be checked with an approval turnaround of about three business days. A complete copy of the ordinance is available to the public on the Green County website.
