Celebrating Our Past: National Historic Cheesemaking Center

This photo is of Baumgartner's Cheese Store before it became a cheese store and tavern. Emil Baumgartner bought the store in October 1931. Initially, Baumgartner's was a cheesemaking supply store for area cheesemakers. He served customers free cheese sandwiches in appreciation for their business. Soon after, he started charging 5 cents per sandwich and later sold beer as well. Today, Baumgartner's is Wisconsin's oldest cheese store. (Photo supplied by the National Historic Cheesemaking Center)
