Celebrating Our Past: Green County Historical Society
37943a.jpg
This photo, made from one of the Bolender negatives in the possession of Dave and Sharon Riese, was taken in the early 1890s. The J. Bolender & Son dry goods store was located in the building where the Garden Deli now operates. John Bolender and his son Fred operated it. To the right is the millinery shop run by Mrs. M. G. Relf and Mrs. Florence Hyde, which operated in the building, and now houses Security Finance. The house that was home to the millinery shop to the left, typical of the earlier buildings on the Square, would have been razed sometime before the Benkert building was built in 1906. GCHS is always looking for older photographs of Monroe to copy and add to its collection. If you have any that we may copy, contact Matt Figi at 325-6503 or mfigi48@tds.net.
