Casey's General Store passes on Monroe

MONROE - Although New Glarus will soon open a branch of Midwestern convenience store chain Casey's General Stores, Monroe missed its chance to open one.

Bill Walljasper, chief financial officer of Casey's General Stores Inc., said the company had attempted to purchase land on the west side of Monroe near Shopko several months ago.

However, Walljasper said, the plan was aborted because of what he referred to as "marshland issues" - the land was not ideal for building on.

Although Walljasper said Casey's is not currently looking for a different Monroe location, the company is hoping to spread to other cities and towns in the area.

"We're always looking to expand our business in Wisconsin," Walljasper said.

Another Casey's location is currently in development in New Glarus, on the site of the now-demolished Swiss Lanes bowling alley at the intersection of 11th Avenue and Wisconsin 69. New Glarus city administrator Bryan Gadow said construction was still in early phases, with a possible completion date in late summer.

Meanwhile, a Casey's location opened in Monticello in mid-March. That location took the place of a Citgo gas station that had been in service for almost 20 years.
