Car goes airborne, driver seriously hurt

Times photo: Tere Dunlap A southbound car ended up facing north about 18 feet below highway level in a creek bed north of Monticello late Wednesday afternoon. The vehicle crashed through a guard rail, breaking off three posts, on the east side of Wisconsin 69. Driver Allen D. Mattes, 53, Monroe, was extricated from the car and taken to Monroe Clinic Hospital with life threatening injuries.
MONROE - One person was injured in a one-vehicle accident around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday on Wisconsin 69 south of Hefty Road, north of Monticello.

According to Monticello Fire Department Assistant Chief Jon Eyler, who was on scene, an Oldsmobile driven by Allen D. Mattes, 53, Monroe, was southbound on Wis. 69 and went through a guardrail on the opposite side of the road.

The car was airborne for about 50 to 60 feet before hitting branches of a tree near a creek bed and coming to rest in the creek, facing northwest.

Eyler said Mattes was extricated from the car and was transported to Monroe Clinic Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Green County Sheriff's Department.
