DARLINGTON - Darlington celebrates the 43rd Canoe Festival this weekend with a host of activities that offer something for everyone.

Events begin Thursday and continue through Sunday.

The annual festival began in 1966 and has grown into a four-day event that includes a carnival at the festival grounds, baseball and softball tournaments at Sieg Field, a 2- and 5-mile run, a princess pageant, teen dance, arts and crafts, fire works, a parade and canoe race from Calamine to Darlington on the Pecatonica River.

Canoes begin at the Calamine Bridge on County C and race 10 miles down the Pecatonica River. They finish just past the City Bridge in Darlington. Entry fees are $15 per canoe. Trophies are awarded to people who finish in first place, and medals are awarded to people who finish second and third.

The events take place at several city locations.

One of the highlights that always seems well received is the talent show, held at 6 p.m. Saturday. Local teens and adults are able to showcase their talents in the show at the festival grounds, which are located at the south end of Main Street near the bridge.

There also are food stands for people who want to eat while they attend the weekend's activities.
