DARLINGTON - For four days, Darlington will celebrate Canoe Fest, by offering more than 35 activities ranging from ball tournaments to buggy rides and fireworks.

The 44th annual Canoe Fest begins at 5 p.m. Thursday, and continues through Sunday, throughout the city.

Just a few of the events taking place include baseball and softball tournaments, a carnival, 2- and 5-mile runs, a dance, a steak fry, a red hair and freckles contest, an arts and crafts fair and a parade.

The home talent contest might likely be one of the more popular events of the weekend. Local residents can show off their talents at the festival grounds, which are located at the south end of Main Street near the bridge.

Another popular event is the canoe race. Canoes start at the Calamine Bridge on County C and race 10 miles down the Pecatonica River. The canoes finish just past the City Bridge in Darlington. Trophies are awarded to first-place finishers, and medals are presented to people who finish second and third.

The festival began in 1966 and has grown into a four-day event.

There will also be plenty of food stands for people who attend the weekend activities.
