Brodhead School Board
There are three candidates running for two spots on the Brodhead school board: Incumbent Mike Krupke and newcomers Abbey Wellemeyer and David Wickline.
Position sought: Brodhead school board
Age: 55
City/town of residence: Brodhead
Family: Wife, Robin; daughter, Meghan
Education: Kishwaukee College Golf Course Management
Occupation: Turf Specialist
Previous elected positions held: Incumbent Brodhead School District Board of Education
What are the top issues facing this district/municipality and how would you work to resolve them?
Currently, school funding is the single most important issue facing education in our district (and throughout the state for that matter). Keeping high level of learning opportunities available to our children with less money is a huge challenge. With that said, sadly, focus on academics is taking a back seat to school funding. My plan is to continue to work with the board and our staff on efficiently using resources while being cognizant of the wants and needs of the community. We are blessed with exceptional staff in Brodhead, and resolving the issues facing us is a team effort. Being an engaged, supportive member of that team, which make no mistake, does include the community, is my job as a school board member.
What are other key issues facing the district/municipality, and how would you work to resolve them?
The implementation of Educator Effectiveness, Smarter Balanced testing, and Common Core Standards is a huge drain on staff time and resources. Again, working closely with to ensure they have the tools they need to accomplish these mandates and effectively teach is my responsibility as a board member.
As I stated earlier, I feel another issue is to turn our focus back to academics. I believe we have gotten so caught up in school funds (rightfully so), we have lost sight of what our real objective is ... academics. Our teachers strive to do this everyday, I also need to remember this and bring that attitude with me in every decision I make.
Why are you the best candidate for this office?
I am the incumbent in this election. With that, I have held the position of vice president and I am currently the sitting board president. With all the issues surrounding education in Wisconsin, having someone experienced in dealing with these current issues is crucial to making informed decisions regarding the education of our children.
