What are the top issues facing this district and how would you work to resolve them?

ISSUES

• Providing our students with a top quality education that prepares them for their life after school as a part of their family, career, and community.

• Improving our scores on the state school report cards.

• Preparing for the implementation of the Common Core Standards mandated by the state.

RESOLUTION

One board member working alone will not resolve these issues. It will take all the board members working together as a team and working with the school administration, staff, parents, and taxpayers in the district to identify the solutions and to provide the resources to resolve these issues. A large part of the solution involves state financial aid to the public school system. We survived the severe school budget cuts from Gov. Walker's last budget because we were able to manage our schools operations in order to absorb those cuts. His budget proposal for this biannual cycle doesn't appear to be as severe but does not provide any fiscal relief for public schools.

What are other key issues facing the district, and how would you work to resolve them?

We have many initiatives being worked on simultaneously by the board and by the school administration. We are planning for the future with the implementation of the charter school conversion for our middle school and applying for planning grants for converting our elementary school and high school to charter schools. The teaching and support staffs has been very, very involved in the planning process for these initiatives.

In addition to planning for the future, we cannot ignore the ongoing operation of the school. So it is important that the school board provide the resources and support for operating the school while encouraging the administration and staff to look to the future.
