DARLINGTON - A Shullsburg man charged last year with a series of business burglaries in Green County now also faces charges in Lafayette County for burglaries in Shullsburg.

Ronald James Leifker, Jr., 32, remains jailed in Darlington on two Class F felony counts of burglary. His cash bond is set at $250 on each charge, with conditions that he not drink or go into bars or liquor stores.

Court records indicate Leifker used a pry bar to force open the back door to The Shag-N-Wag Pet Salon, 145 W. Water St., and took about $400 in cash on Aug. 23. Police used video surveillance to identify him as the burglar.

He also reportedly broke into Shullsburg Public Schools, 444 N. Judgement St., on Sept. 3, again leaving pry marks.

Leifker stood mute on the charges. Pleas of not guilty were entered in both cases, and he has a jury trial scheduled for December.

Earlier this year, Leifker signed a $10,000 signature bond on a still-pending case in Green County for a series of burglaries in 2011. He's charged with three felony counts of burglary and two felony counts of criminal damage to property, along with multiple misdemeanor charges of theft, entry into a locked coin box and criminal damage to property.

Just before the break of dawn on July 16, 2011, Leifker and co-defendant Matthew D. Schupbach, 31, Beloit, broke into Sir Buk's Dance Club, W5222 County KK, Town of Monroe, and took alcohol and about $2,000 from the ATM, cash registers and coin-operated games, according to court records.

Schupbach pleaded no contest and was sentenced this summer to two years of probation, with conditions that he undergo counseling and pay his part of nearly $12,500 in restitution.

On Aug. 28, 2011, Leifker and two co-defendants James L. Roberts, Jr., 29, Lena, Ill., and Dustin C. Ruthven, 30, address unknown, allegedly broke into two buildings in Browntown.

At Goebel's Inn, 108 S. Mill St., Leifker is charged with taking $1,370 in cash, along with a television, cigarettes, candy and soda.

The burglars left the tavern trashed, according to descriptions in police reports. Doors were pried open and busted, an exterior window broken and the jukebox glass shattered and numerous CDs taken. The door to the walk-in cooler was left standing open, causing food to spoil. The burglars even emptied a donation box for Lafayette County recreational trail guides.

The jukebox alone cost $3,700 to replace.

In the course of the burglary, Leifker punched Roberts in the face and Roberts' nose dripped blood all over the floor and got smeared on the front of a Cherry Master video game console, according to an investigator's report.

The trio also allegedly went next door to burglarize and steal cash from the Browntown Civic Center, 110 S. Mill St.

About a week later, all three were involved in and later convicted of a burglary of the Royal Pub, 306 N. Park Blvd., Freeport.

Leifker's co-defendants in the Browntown burglaries were also prosecuted. Roberts pleaded no contest and was granted a two-year deferred prosecution in May 2014. Ruthven's case is still pending. He has a preliminary hearing Nov. 23.

Pleas of not guilty are entered in Leifker's Green County case. He has a status conference Oct. 14.
