MONROE - Blackhawk Technical College boosted civic engagement Thursday, when the Student Activities Club hosted a voter registration day.
"My Vote Counts" was the theme of the project.
Student Heather Atkins said the project was important to get others interested in politics. But the hands-on part was fun, she said.
"I got to meet representatives from different parties and state organizations," she said.
Atkins said she made "lots" of phone calls, sent e-mails, and even drove to Madison to get representatives from all the possible different political parties in one place at one time.
The drive to Madison was to get the League of Women Voters involved. Atkins managed to have literature available from the League and from the Green and Libertarian parties, which do not have a presence or an office in Monroe, she said.
Atkins also got some candidates running for office to drop in to talk with registering voters.
Three new voters signed up within the first hour and a half. But Atkins was more pleased to see the conversations that opened.
"A lot of people are coming up to the tables and conversations are just happening," she said.
Dan Phelps, deputized to register voters, was on hand to help with the project.
"For some people, the whole process can be intimidating, and it's not a difficult process. The goal is to make it easy. Here it takes five minutes," he said.
