FREEPORT, Ill. - A Browntown man was killed and his passenger injured Tuesday when his vehicle left the road and hit a tree, according to the Stephenson County Sheriff's Department.

Nathan P. Hess, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene. Hess was a 2007 graduate of Black Hawk High School.

The passenger in the vehicle, Kenneth W. Frazer, 20, Orangeville, was transported to Monroe Clinic and later was taken to a Madison hospital. Neither his condition, nor the hospital where he was taken, were released.

The accident took place at about 7:15 p.m. on Winslow Road and North Winslow Road in Stephenson County.

Both occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle.

The cause of the crash hasn't been determined, and the crash remains under investigation.

The Winslow Fire Department, Winslow Police Department and Leamon's Ambulance assisted at the scene.

Funeral services for Hess are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, 1455 Mansion Drive and 18th Avenue in Monroe. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
