BRODHEAD - A tax rate of $9.55 per $1,000 of property value is needed to support Brodhead school district's 2013-2014 tax levy amount, a 74 cent increase compared to $8.81 last school year.
At its budget hearing and annual meeting Oct. 28, district voters approved a total tax levy of $3.76 million. The levy amount is $229,000 or 6.5 percent more than the 2012-2013 amount of $3.53 million.
Under the new tax rate, the owner of a $100,000 home will pay $955 in school taxes, $74 more than last year. The owner of a $200,000 house will pay $1,910 in taxes, or $148 more.
Part of the increased tax rate is caused by the decrease in property values in the district. The district lost $6.94 million in property value in 2012, down 17 percent from the previous year, from $401 million to $394 million, according to information supplied by the school district.
Of the amount levied, the district will apply $3.58 million to the general fund, $175,000 to debt service, and $2,000 to the community service fund.
In the general fund, curriculum and instruction costs will increase by 3.3 percent or $183,000, to $5.71 million, up from $5.53 million last school year. Support services, including administration costs and services for staff and students, will increase 6.4 percent or $235,000, to $3.89 million, up from $3.65 million last year. Other general expenditures for non-program transactions, including open enrollments, decreased $39,000 or 2.4 percent, to end at $1.58 million.
The total general fund of $11.2 million is up $378,000 from last school year, or 3.5 percent.
In other funds, expenditures compared to last school year increased by $61,000, or 3.5 percent, to $1.8 million in special projects funds. But expenditures decreased by $829,000 or 82.6 percent in debt services funds to end at $175,000. Food services decreased by $27,600 or 5.7 percent, ending at $457,000. And in packaged services and cooperative program funds, expenditures were decreased by $20,400 or 37 percent, to end at $34,600. Community Service Fund remained the same at $2,000.
The district's total expenditures for 2013-2014 are $13.6 million.
In revenues, the district is expecting to receive $6.8 million from general state aid, about $90,000 less than last year. The district will also receive $137,500 in categorical state aid, about $25,000 more.
