BRODHEAD - A referendum to provide Brodhead School District $800,000 in each of the next three school years passed Tuesday, April 2 on a vote of 786 to 508.

With the referendum authorization, the school district tax rate is estimated at $9.07 in 2013-14; $9.13 in 2014-15; and $8.97 in 2015-16. The district's tax rate this year was $8.81 per thousand dollars of property value.

"We are grateful for the community support, and voters can count on the board that the money will be spent wisely," Superintendent Chuck Deery said Tuesday night.

The referendum amount of $2.4 million will not cover the estimated deficits over the next three years, projected to be $833,700 next year, more than $1 million in 2014-15 and $1.3 million in 2015-16. Deery reported minor cuts and the district fund balance will probably make up the difference.

The school district referendum passed 682 to 443 (61 to 39 percent) in its nine Green County precincts and 104 to 65 (62 to 38 percent) in the four Rock County precincts.
