MONROE- A Brodhead man pleaded guilty Friday to sexually assaulting two underage girls for three years.
John Larry Stafeil, 71, pleaded guilty to a Class B felony count of repeated acts of first-degree sexual assault against a child and a Class C felony count of repeated acts of second-degree sexual assault against a child.
Stafeil was charged in November with three counts of repeated first-degree assault and two counts of repeated second-degree assault after two children told investigators that he had groped them repeatedly for three years.
One child said Stafeil had groped her breasts and genitals between Dec. 10, 2012, and Dec. 9, 2015. The other accused Stafeil of similar assaults between April 6, 2014, and May 31, 2016.
Both children were preteens when they were first assaulted.
Stafeil's attorney, Jack Hoag, said he had not come to a joint recommendation with Green County District Attorney Craig Nolen for Stafeil's sentence. Nolen said he recommended a 10-year prison term followed by 10 additional years of supervision. Hoag did not disclose his recommendation.
Green County Circuit Judge Thomas Vale ordered a pre-sentencing investigation to determine an appropriate sentence. Vale's determination will be made Sept. 7.
Stafeil's maximum possible sentence on his guilty charges is 65 years in prison.
