JANESVILLE — Matt Messel, the owner of a Brodhead truck repair business, has died of injuries he sustained in a rollover crash last week south of Brodhead just across the Rock County line.

Messel, 45, Brodhead, died at Mercyhealth Hospital in Janesville on Monday afternoon, April 8, according to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident happened at about 6:20 p.m. Friday, April 5, in the 14000 block of Wisconsin 81, Town of Avon. Witnesses reported seeing a westbound black Ford F-150 pickup truck swerving all over the road before it crashed.

“The pickup truck flipped end to end before barrel-rolling several times and coming to rest on all four tires next to a garage,” the sheriff’s office reported. Messel was ejected from the pickup truck. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.

Messel was a diesel mechanic and owned Messel Truck Repair LLC.

Aaron Steinmann, a friend and fellow mechanic in the area, said Messel was “a great guy.”

“He will be missed,” said Steinmann, who co-owns L&S Truck Service of Juda.

Steinmann’s wife and L&S’s secretary, Darci Steinmann, wrote a tribute to Messel on their business Facebook page.

“He is not only our customer and competitor, he is our true friend,” she wrote. “We will miss seeing you multiple times a day, we will miss your laugh ... most of all, we will miss your truthfulness, honesty and loyalty.

“Fly high, our friend, we will hold the wrench for you.”

She also thanked Messel for being an organ and tissue donor: “The recipients are lucky to have you.”
