MONROE - A Brodhead man was charged this week with multiple counts of sexual assault after he was accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting two girls over the course of three years.

John Larry Stafeil, 70, faces five counts of repeated sexual assault of the same child, three of which are Class B felonies while the remaining two are Class C felonies.

Stafeil's charges arose after two children told investigators on Oct. 28 that he had groped them on multiple occasions for years when they were younger.

The first child said Stafeil had assaulted her several times between Dec. 10, 2012 and Dec. 9, 2015. The victim said Stafeil would rub her breasts and grope her genitals under her clothes.

The second victim accused Stafeil of similar assaults between April 6, 2014 and May 31, 2016. She reported Stafeil's assaults to authorities in May of this year.

Both children were preteens when the assaults began.

Stafeil signed a $25,000 signature bond Thursday with conditions that he not have contact with the victims or their families, or any person under the age of 18 except under their parenal supervision. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 23.

The maximum possible sentence for Stafeil's charges is 170 years in prison.
