Brodhead library plans programs on Muslim beliefs, customs

BRODHEAD - Brodhead Memorial Public Library will be holding a number of programs in the coming months in conjunction with the topic of "Bridging Cultures: Muslim Journeys."

"Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys" is a book and film collection that explores the people, places, histories, beliefs and cultures of Muslims in the United States and around the world. The Brodhead Memorial Public Library is one of 840 libraries and state humanities councils nationwide that received the collection of materials.

"The Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys" is a project of the National Endowment for the Humanities, conducted in cooperation with the American Library Association.

Upcoming programs include:

• The "Our Journey to Islam: Muslims' Beliefs and Practices in Islam" presentation is set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21. Speakers include Matthew Braun and Salih Duane Erschen. Braun is a native of Brodhead who learned about Islam while attending Beloit College and began practicing Islam while attending graduate school. Erschen, Beloit, is the president of Madison Muslim Da'wa Circle and is a supervisor for Paramedics, Deerfield. Braun and Erschen will speak on what Muslims believe and how Muslims practice the religion of Islam.

• The film, "Prince Among Slaves," will be shown 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at the library. A discussion will follow the film. The documentary, which premiered in February 2008 on PBS recounts the true story of an African Muslim prince who was captured and sold into slavery in the American South. After 40 years of enslavement, the prince regained his freedom and became a national celebrity.

• "The Hajj: A Muslim Pilgrimage" will be presented by Dr. Debra Majeed at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30. Majeed, professor in the philosophy and religious studies department at Beloit College, will discuss the challenges and benefits that Muslims encounter when they set out on to complete the ritual of Hajj.

All Muslim Journeys Events are free and open to the public.
