BRODHEAD — Brodhead Police Chief Chris Hughes announced April 15 that city streets are open to all terrain vehicle and utility vehicle traffic, except Wisconsin 11.
In 2017, Wisconsin law was changed to enable city, village or town officials to authorize ATV/UTV use on any road posted 35 mph or less within their territorial boundaries.
In 2018, Brodhead Common Council amended the city’s ordinance to allow ATVs/UTVs on all city streets, except Wis. 11. Hughes stated there were concerns about adding ATV/UTV traffic to the already heavy traveled Wis. 11, especially given the number of state-permitted oversized loads using this highway. The ordinance does permit ATVs/UTVs to cross Wis. 11 from an authorized intersecting street.
The city ordinance was also changed to adopt state Department of Natural Resources and traffic laws which regulate ATVs/UTVs. Hughes cautions parents and young riders that DNR laws prohibits those under the age of 16, even if they possess a DNR ATV safety certificate, from operating at ATV/UTV on city streets, unless they are accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or by an adult who the parent or guardian has authorized.
Hughes reminds all drivers, regardless if they are operating a vehicle or an ATV/UTV, to eliminate distractions, be patient and stay focused. Motorists who encounter ATVs/UTVs on the road should slow down and wait for a safe opportunity to pass. ATV/UTV operators should always be aware of their surroundings and always use helmets and protective gear. Most importantly, never consume alcohol or drugs before or during ATV operation.
