BRODHEAD -The Brodhead Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the ninth annual Farm Tour from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 9. The free tour is intended to acquaint individuals and families with how small family farms work and sustain themselves in an era of an increasing number of large-scale farming operations.
Maps will be available on May 9 at the farms or downtown Brodhead businesses.
Farm owners and their families will give the tours. Touring farms are:
Kinkoona Sheep Farm, 16734 W. Dorner Road, is owned by Suellen Thomson-Link. The farm uses no chemicals and hosts a diversity of pasture grazed animals, as well as aquaponic gardening. Organic wool products, rain water catchers, contoured water ditches, terracing and composting are all examples of sustainable healthy farming. For more information, visit www.baabaashop.com.
Scotch Hill Farm, 910 S. Scotch Hill Road, is owned by Tony and Dela Ends. The farm grows 100 varieties of organic vegetables, hay and small grains. Chickens and goats are free-range eating chemical free, non-antibiotic feed. Subscriptions containing a variety of in-season vegetables are sold, occasionally including eggs. The Opalicious Bee Farm in the Ten Eyck Orchard, W968 Wisconsin 11/81, is where hundreds of thousands of bees pollinate the apple trees. Honey is extracted at the "Honey House," as well as beeswax, which is made into lip balm and other products. For more information, call 608-214-4866.
