SPRING VALLEY - A 16-year-old Brodhead resident was transported by helicopter following a one-vehicle crash Saturday.

At about 9:12 p.m., William R. Romanski, was driving a 1997 Saturn four-door car south on South Dickey Road about one-tenth of a mile north of West Keesey Road in southwest Rock County, when he lost control of the vehicle trying to negotiate a turn and crashed into a tree, according to a statement from the Rock County Sheriff's Department.

React Helicopter from Rockford, Ill., was called to transport Romanski to Rockford Memorial Hospital after emergency personnel used the Jaws of Life to extract him from the car.

His condition was not known by the Sheriff's Department, according to the statement.

Two passengers in the vehicle, a 13-year-old and a 16-year-old, were transported by ambulance to a local hospital for "non-incapacitating" injuries, treated and released, the Sheriff's statement said.

The Sheriff's Department did not reveal where the passengers were from.

After Romanski lost control of the vehicle, the car entered the north shoulder of the road into a ditch. The vehicle became airborne and landed wedged between two trees with the driver's side down, according to an investigation, the statement said.

Speed and failure to control the vehicle appear to be contributing factors in the crash; alcohol was not considered a factor, according to the statement.

The two passengers were able to free themselves.

Romanski will be cited with two counts of causing bodily harm by reckless driving and a violation of the mandatory seat belt law.

Romanski and his 16-year-old passenger were not wearing seatbelts, according to the statement.

The 16-year-old passenger also will be cited with violating the mandatory seat belt law.

The Orfordville Fire Department and EMS, Brodhead EMS and Janesville paramedics responded to the crash.
