Bright outlook after renovation

MONROE - New memberships are going hand in hand with the newly-remodeled YMCA of Green County facility.

More people than ever before are joining the Y after taking a tour of the building, since the YMCA had its open house Oct. 4 to show off its renovations, according to Sandy Dierckman, who manages the front desk.

"The current membership drive is in conjunction with the renovation, and people are coming in to take a tour and look around," Executive Director Reid Stangel said.

The brighter front entrance on the north side of the building is where the action is.

The entrance is surrounded by walls of glass. Visitors and members can see out to the football field, watch gymnasts performing on the new 1,764-square-foot, midnight blue spring floor and look through to the offices.

The other side of the building now is a comfortable lounge, not only for kids after school but also for entire families. Already three times larger than the previous kids game room, the lounge can open up into the babysitting room next to it to create an even larger area, if needed.

The lounge, with an autumn gold tweed carpet, is equipped with a ping pong table, air hockey table and a Nintendo Wii, and even has a bottled juice machine and popcorn popper. For sport enthusiasts, a case of trophies fills one wall.

The lounge is staffed from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on weekdays for after-school activities.

The new YWeCare preschool could be the envy of all children under 5. The large room has a full kitchen and a computer lab. The school also offers weekly gymnastic and swimming lessons.

The classroom also has office space for the preschool staff, which they didn't have before. The classroom carpet's hues of blue echo the lounge's tweed carpet. Renovations were finished in time to open the preschool Sept. 2.

The lounge and preschool have their own secured double doors.

The $320,000 project, which included renovations to the swimming pool and a new pool office, was completed within its budget, Stangel said.

The project was 70 percent funded by the Dr. Scholl Foundation. Donations from membership and the community covered the remaining costs.
