Brief lockdown at Parkside school

MONROE - A phone call from a parent who was a suspect in a child-abuse investigation prompted the lockdown of Parkside Elementary School for about 45 minutes Thursday afternoon.

At about 2:13 p.m. Thursday, the Monroe Police Department was notified by Parkside staff that the school had gone into lockdown procedures after receiving the call Michael P. Kaszuba, 38, Monroe, who said he was en route to the school to talk to a child, and wanted the child removed from a class. School authorities felt this was suspicious, and contacted juvenile authorities, the Monroe Police Department said in a news release.

The juvenile authorities advised the school of their concern, and to contact the police. Kaszuba had been in earlier contact with police and was scheduled for an appointment to speak with a detective, Monroe Police said.

After school officials locked down the school, the Monroe Police placed officers around the school to watch Kaszuba. An officer made contact with Kaszuba, and advised him not to go to the school.

Kaszuba then went to the office of a local attorney, who contacted police. The lockdown was ended, and students were released at their regular time. Police stayed in the area for some time after school was ended.

Kaszuba turned himself in to police shortly after, and was charged with felony physical abuse to a child, and was held in secure detention pending a later court appearance.

There were no charges in relation to the school lockdown, Police Chief Fred Kelley said.
