BREAKING NEWS: Monroe man dies in house fire

MONROE -- A Monroe man died Sunday morning following a house fire at about 12:30a.m. at 2415 16th St. in Monroe.

Jeffrey R. Sullivan, 37, was in the house with his family when the Monroe Police Department received a 9-1-1 call for a home fully engulfed in flames. Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said in a news release that officers tried to find a way into the house, or to see and locate Sullivan inside the house, but weren't able to do so because of heavy smoke andflames. Monroe firefighters arrrived at the scene a few minutes later and were able to enter the house.

Sullivan was found in a basement room and was taken to the Monroe Clinic hospital by Green County Emergency Medical Services. He was treated at the hospital but died from fire-related injuries shortly after his arrival.

Other occupants in the residence at the time of the fire were identified as Ruth R. Sullivan, 35, Julia B. Sullivan, 16, David A. Sullivan, 13, and Levi D. Sullivan. Julia Sullivan sustained fire related injuries.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
