MONROE - A fire which broke out early Thursday morning at Phillips Furniture and Appliance in Monroe is believed to have been intentionally set.
Fire Chief Daryl Rausch suspected arson because a pile of mattresses was ignited near the store to start the fire. The Monroe Fire Department received a call at 2:18 a.m. for a fire at the store, at 905 30th St.
By 5:15 a.m., the fire was contained. Rausch said firefighters saved the building, which suffered interior smoke damage and exterior fire damage.
Firefighters from seven departments: Monroe, Juda, Monticello, South Wayne, Brodhead, Orangeville and New Glarus responded, as did Green County EMS.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire, Rausch said.
The fire remains under investigation.
