MONROE - A home invasion and robbery just after midnight Friday on Monroe's far north side left two residents unharmed.
The residents, a husband, age 71 and his wife, age 70, called Monroe police at about 12:15 a.m. Friday to report the home invasion robbery, after the intruders fled.
Two men force their way into the couple's home at 1004 2nd Street North when the husband opened the door after being awakened by the front door bell, according to Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley in a news release.
Kelley reported the homeowner scuffled with the intruders, who managed to gain physical control over him and his wife.
The intruders demanded money and drugs. After obtaining an undetermined amount of cash and prescription drugs, the intruders fled on foot.
The intruders took steps to conceal their identify and were in the residence for only a few minutes. The residence was dark during the incident.
The couple declined to comment publicly while police are investigating the incident.
Police believe the public is not in danger. They say, at this point in the investigation, it appears the intruders may have targeted this specific residence.
However, police are cautioning residents not to open their doors, especially late at night, unless the caller is known. Residents are encouraged to call police if they are fearful of opening their doors in these types of situations.
Monroe Police Department are asking anyone with information on this crime to call 608-329-2400, or to contact Green County Crimestoppers, by telephone or by texting 1-800-422-7463 (1-800-IC CRIME).
Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
