SOUTH WAYNE - School officials evacuated Black Hawk School buildings Monday morning in South Wayne, following the discovery of a bomb threat.
Law enforcement officials found no evidence of anything suspicious during a thorough search of the buildings and all vehicles on the property and had no suspects immediately following the search, according to district Superintendent Willy Chambers.
Students returned to classes at about 12:30 p.m.
Chambers would release no specific information about the written threat, pending an investigation by law enforcement officials.
Chambers was notified at about 8:30 a.m. by Jerry Mortimer, principal at the school, informing him that bomb threat had been found. Chambers was in Gratiot at the middle school at the time.
Students were evacuated to a nearby church, about one block from the school. About 270 high school and elementary students attend the school.
"The students were calm and behaved very well" during the evacuation, Chambers said.
The Lafayette County Sheriff's Department, South Wayne Fire Department and Green County EMS responded. Lafayette County Sheriff's Canine Unit was also at the scene.
Chambers said bathrooms, lockers and even the ceilings were included in the search. Staff-owned vehicles, well as students' vehicles, were searched.
Students assembled at about 1:30 p.m., after eating a late lunch, to hear information about the evacuation. They were told the culprit had about 15 minutes following the assembly to confess to writing the threat. Anyone with knowledge about the note, or ripping off a piece of paper of a particular size from their notebook to give to a friend, loaning a piece of paper, was also advised to meet with school officials, or risk becoming a party to a crime.
