MONROE - The Monroe School Board unanimously voted to hire Dan Keyser as the next director of curriculum and instruction Monday, July 23.
Keyser was one of three finalists for the job. The other finalists were Terri Montgomery, the district's reading specialist and gifted and talented coordinator, and Gretchen Wolfe.
"I'm thrilled to be here and get started," said Keyser, who attended the meeting and was in the audience.
Keyser will receive a $102,000 salary. He will resign from his assistant principal position at Janesville Parker High School Tuesday, July 31. He will start in Monroe in August.
The director of curriculum and instruction position became vacant when Cory Hirsbrunner left that role to become superintendent of Monroe schools July 1. Previous superintendent Larry Brown resigned to accept a position as superintendent in Rice Lake.
Keyser began his career as a math and science teacher at Craig High School in 1999 and became Parker's assistant principal in 2004. As assistant principal, Keyser handled attendance and discipline and supervised the math and science areas. He served on the Janesville district's students discipline and Response to Intervention committees.
In other action, the school board:
n Approved a one-year 2012-13 contract for Monroe Association of Support Staff members that includes a 2.19 percent salary increase. Monroe School Board President Bob Erb said that was on par with the increases administrators received.
n Hired Chandra Deprez as a Monroe High School library assistant.
n Approved hiring Brent Niemeier as a special education teacher at Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy and Joshua Firgens as a business teacher at the high school.
