Board awaits word on superintendent's job status

NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus School Board will wait to see if Superintendent Barbara Thompson leaves before it settles on a plan to replace her.

Thompson, who has been with the district since 2003, is one of two finalists for the same position in the Montgomery, Ala., district.

President Mark Romich said the board understands that superintendents move to other districts.

"It's part of the business of being a superintendent," Romich said. "We recognize they don't stay in one place for a long time."

If Thompson is selected for the job in Montgomery, she would join the district before the first day of school Aug. 10.

Thompson also was a finalist for the Janesville and Beloit school district superintendent positions earlier this year.

The district doesn't have any written plans to address Thompson's possible departure, but a plan of action is something the board should consider regardless of whether Thompson leaves the district, Romich said.

"It's certainly something we should talk about," he said. "It's something the board should tackle in the future."

While there isn't a written plan, Romich said the district does have an idea of what would happen if Thompson should leave based on what happens when the superintendent is on vacation or away from the district on business.

"The school principals step up and the business manager handles part of the district operations," he said.

If Thompson would leave the district, it would be up to the school board to find a replacement. Romich hasn't been through a superintendent candidate search. As board president he would call an emergency board meeting and talk with other board members to determine how the district will search for a replacement for Thompson. He said the board also will discuss how it would delegate the superintendent's duties until a replacement could be found.

"All of that will have to be discussed," he said.

It's premature to come up with a plan right now, Romich said.

"Until the position opening has been created, there's not much we will do," he said.

Four members of the Montgomery County Board of Education and two Montgomery magnet school principals wrapped up a two-day visit to New Glarus on Friday, according to the Montgomery Advertiser newspaper. The board members met with Thompson, community leaders, teachers, parents and current and former New Glarus school board members.
