Blackhawk Tech offering summer computer classes

JANESVILLE - The Monroe campus of Blackhawk Technical College will offer five new computer skills classes during the summer - courses aimed to not only enhance personal computer skills but professional skills as well.

The courses were designed based on feedback from BTC students who had completed previous computer skills courses. Three of the courses will be taught in two sessions while the other two are one-session courses. None of the five classes conflict with each other so interested students may take as many of the five courses they choose.

Each course will be held in a computer lab on the Monroe Campus, unless otherwise stated. Registration begins Tuesday, April 22. Classes are limited to 21 students. To register, visit www.blackhawk.edu or in person at the campus, 210 4th Ave.

The Clipart, Smartart and Borders in MS Word class will teach how to insert ClipArt, SmartArt, borders, headers, footers, hyperlinks, text boxes and other functions that enhance documents. Class time will be given to practice these functions in MS Word. Two sessions for the classes will be held - on Wednesday, July 23 and Wednesday, July 30 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The cost is $22.33 or $4 for seniors. The instructor is Robin McLeish.

The Creating a Pivot Table in MS Excel class will go over the basics on how to create a Pivot Table and why someone may want to use one in Excel. The course will go over Pivot Table basics and not so much on other aspects of Excel. The class will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 1. The cost is $16.22 or $4 for seniors. The instructor is Robin McLeish.

The Getting the Most Out of MS Excel Charts class will give an overview of charts in Excel. The class will spend time on charts for the class and not as much on Excel spreadsheets. Class time will be given to go over different views of charts and how they change the look of Excel data. Two sessions for the classes will be held - on Tuesday, June 10 and Tuesday, June 17 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The cost is $22.33 or $4 for seniors. The instructor is Robin McLeish.

The Facebook and LinkedIn Basics class will go through how to set privacy settings on Facebook, and how to set up a LinkedIn profile. The class is good for those who have not already set up Facebook/LinkedIn pages, as well as those who want to gather more information on how to use these social sites. Two sessions for the classes will be held - on Thursday, July 10 and Thursday, July 17 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The cost is $22.33 or $4 for seniors. The instructor is Robin McLeish.

The Introduction to Pinterest and Just a Pinch - Fun Interactive Sites class will go through how to access these sites as well as how to create and save individual areas of interest. Other "like" sites will also be looked at. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, July 24 at the Behring Senior Center. The cost is $16.22 or $4 for seniors. In addition to the five new courses, the Monroe Campus also will offer two summer school sections of the Custom Cards class and two marketing classes - Social Media Marketing and Marketing on a Shoestring Budget.

During the Custom Cards - Theme 1 class, students will learn the practical art of making custom cards by hand. Students will learn a variety of card-making techniques, including simple fold cards, embellishments, layered paper and embossing. Each class will feature all new cards, including seasonal and/or special event themes. Students will need to bring a ruler, small sharp scissors, pencil, notebook, double-sided adhesive tape and Fiskar cutter with orange blade, if they have one, to class. A project kit fee of $5 is available at the class for materials to make four cards during the one session. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 17 and will cost $14.80 or $10.48 for seniors. The instructor is Debra Miller.

The Social Media Marketing: Making the Most of Your Online Presence class will teach students how to use social media sites to connect with their customers, including how to best reach customers to communicate information, share sales promotions, solve customer questions and generate sales through the use of social media tools. The class will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 16. The cost is $16.22 or $4 for seniors. The instructor is Leslie Schmidt.

The Marketing On a Shoestring Budget class will explain the marketing opportunities that won't break the bank, so individuals can develop their own marketing plan. Some topics include: branding basics, free advertising opportunities, getting the most out of member associations, and using the right medium to reach customers. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, June 23. The cost is $16.22 or $4 for seniors. The instructor is Leslie Schmidt
