Sam Messerli, owner and operator of Legacy Personal Training, got his best friend, Ruby, a 6-month-old boxer Dec. 29 from Grey Oak Boxers, a dog breeder in Adams County.

Messerli said he has always been fond of boxers and had good experiences with them growing up. He decided the timing was finally right to get one and once he met Ruby, he said it wasn't a hard decision to make. Ruby got her name because Messerli always thought it would be a good name for a female dog.

Describe Ruby's personality.

Ruby is very high energy, extremely playful and loves people. She loves to give kisses in the face. She has typical boxer behavior. She's close with my wife and children. She has to be in constant company and always wants to be around people. Every day, usually close to her bedtime, she always has to do her hot lap out of the blue where she does a few loops, burning out wherever she goes.

What do you and Ruby like to do together?

Oh, we pretty much do everything together. We have fun playing ball and going on walks. I'm building her into running, and she likes to ride in the truck with me. She's my little buddy. She hangs here at the gym with me when I'm working. One of my clients has a puppy, and they're best friends.

What has it been like having Ruby in your life?

It's had its challenges. It's like a baby but fast-forwarded. You get to deal with the messes, but you also get to be with them when they experience things for the first time; it's just a lot faster than kids. The first couple of months were rough and less sleep, but she really has been such a great joy. When I have had to leave her at home, it's been fun to get her greeting (when he returns).
