Local photographer and piano teacher Mary Soddy talks about her best friend, Lily, a 7-year-old calico cat.

Soddy got Lily about five years ago from her friend who had moved into an apartment that didn't allow cats. Soddy has always been a cat person and previously owned two Himalayan cats and a Siamese. She put her Himalayan cats in a cat show and said they were "champions."

Describe Lily's personality.

She's very outgoing. She has a tendency to be aggressive, but I've trained her to do tricks like sit, roll over and shake hands. She realizes I'm her mommy, although that doesn't mean she'll always do what I tell her. If she ever got loose she'd do fine in the wild.

What do you like to do together?

We're together all the time. We go for walks in the cat stroller. Her favorite game is when I go into my apartment and throw cat treats down the steps. She'd make a good volleyball player the way she hits them down. She likes me to chase her, and another game she likes is hide-and-seek.

What has it been like having Lily in your life?

She's lots of fun. She makes me laugh. It's somewhat like having a child because she's quite demanding. She's always doing funny stuff. Unless she's sleeping, she's just always full of activity.
