Organist and director of the Monroe Swiss Singers, Deb Krauss Smith talks about her best friend Duffy, a 7-year-old collie.

Krauss Smith and her husband, Greg, who live north of Monroe, had collie-type dogs before and wanted something similar. They found Duffy in Maquoketa, Iowa, on Petfinder.com, and brought him home. Krauss Smith came up with the name Duffy after looking at a list of Celtic baby names.

Describe Duffy's personality.

He loves attention. He would rather be petted than eat, which for most dogs is pretty weird. He loves to be around kids. He's mild mannered, and he gets excited when he's around new people.

What do you and Duffy like to do together?

There are plenty of places to walk on our farm, so we go for walks. He likes to go for car rides. A lot of times I'll take him with me if I have to run an errand. We have a cottage in Lake Wisconsin, and he likes going there. He just loves being with us whenever and whatever we're doing.

What has it been like having Duffy in your life?

We've always had a dog. They're wonderful companions. If you've had a rotten day, they're always there to greet you. He's always happy and provides a lot of entertainment. He'll even help me round up our goats.
