Deb Broge, executive director of operations at the Green County Humane Society, who lives in Monticello, talks about her best friend and new family addition Abbie, a 2-year-old spaniel and retriever mix.

Broge and her husband, Steve, have three other dogs: Rylee, a 3-year-old German shorthair; Charlee, a 6-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel; and Mikki, a 15-year-old Tibetan terrier. She wanted to find another dog to match Rylee's high energy. She met Abbie when the humane society received a transfer of dogs from Alabama and decided she would be a good fit.

Describe Abbie's personality.

She's very outgoing. She loves people and gets along with everyone she sees. She's joyous and a cuddler. She sleeps with us at night. She just gets in the bed and sleeps between us. She's a lot of fun.

What do you like to do together?

We go walking a lot. We're always in the backyard playing with them. They like to play fetch, but hiking and walking, we do a lot of that. We love playing with them and watching them interact. They give us a lot of enjoyment. They're like four-legged kids.

What has it been like having your dogs in your life?

They're everything to us. They are such a part of our lives. Everything we do revolves around them. They're there to greet us every day when we get home. I can't imagine life without them.
